Man sentenced to prison following police pursuit, assault on officer
A Leavenworth County Judge sentenced a Linwood man on charges related to threatening a deputy with a gun, fleeing from police and driving with a suspended license.
The sentencing took place Wednesday, July 12, in Leavenworth County District Court.
Cody D. Cramer, 36, was sentenced to serve 18 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections for aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, six months in jail for fleeing or attempting to elude police, and six months in jail for driving while suspended. The three sentences will run concurrently, according to a release from Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson.
On July 17, 2022, Cramer was arrested by a Leavenworth County deputy in Linwood at approximately 5:00 p.m. Before his arrest, Cramer was involved in a police pursuit with Bonner Springs police and later with a Leavenworth County deputy.
While the deputy attempted to pull Cramer over, Cramer reduced his speed, waived at the deputy, and sped away again. The pursuit ended just outside of Cramer’s home. Once stopped, Cramer exited his car and attempted to enter his home while disobeying the deputy’s requests to stop. While on the residence’s front porch, the deputy decided to deploy his taser. During the incident, Cramer reached down with both hands towards his waistband, where a gun was visible.
On May 22, Cramer was found guilty of fleeing from police and driving with a canceled, suspended, or revoked license. This jury couldn’t unanimously decide on an aggravated assault on a law enforcement charge, resulting in a hung jury.
On June 12, during a retrial on the charge of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, a jury found Cramer guilty.
“The safety of our community and our law enforcement officers is of the utmost importance; our officers have a tough job to do – that’s why we retried this case,” Thompson said.
