The Leavenworth County Justice Center at 601 S. Third St., LeavenworthA Leavenworth man who pled guilty last month in a case involving a toddler who was seriously wounded during a self-inflicted shooting involving an unattended handgun was sentenced Monday in Leavenworth County District Court.
Andrew Orser, 29, was arrested Nov. 5, 2022, after police officers responded to a call involving a child suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside a home in Leavenworth.
Orser pled guilty to three counts of endangering a child, one count of possession of drug paraphernalia, and one count of possession of marijuana, according to a release from Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson.
Orser was ordered to serve probation of 24 months during a sentencing hearing on Wednesday, July 19.
Court documents state that the victim’s mother and stepfather dropped the victim off at Orser’s home. Orser left the toddler unattended and unsupervised in the home’s living room. Before leaving the child alone, Orser left his loaded handgun on the living room floor below an end table. Orser told investigators that he placed “Paw Patrol” on the television before going to his bedroom to watch a movie. Orser stated that he heard a loud noise and crying from the victim.
When Orser returned to the living room, he found that the victim had suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
During the investigation, detectives found marijuana, a bong, hemp rolling papers, torches and a grinder in the home’s living room.
“Regardless of your feelings about guns, your number one responsibility as a parent is the safety of your child. Not being a responsible parent and gun owner is not excusable.” Thompson said. “We worked with the family to best benefit the child while resolving this case.”
