Lansing inmate sentenced to 14 more months
Byron Brooks, 38-year-old inmate at Lansing Correctional Facility, was sentenced to an additional 14 months for attempted aggravated battery.
While in custody, Brooks was needed to be fingerprinted and began to attack a sheriff’s deputy, according to a release from Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson. Upon his attack, the deputy was able to protect himself by punching Brooks and placing him on the ground.
Other staff came in to assist the deputy and secure Brooks.
Brooks was already serving prison for distributing cocaine and possessing drug paraphernalia.
“Ever grateful for our law enforcement, they do the toughest and most honorable jobs,” Thompson said. “They go to work every day with the hope they go home that night unharmed. Sadly, they must always prepare for someone attempting to hurt them.”
