A 50-year-old man who attempted to possess meth while being treated for hypothermia in an area medical facility has been sentenced to prison.

On Nov. 29, William N. Campbell pled no contest to a charge of attempted unlawful possession of methamphetamine, a drug severity level 5 felony. Campbell’s plea was accepted, and the court found him guilty.

During a sentencing hearing Friday, a judge ordered Campbell to serve 28 months in prison for the crime.

According to court documents, Campbell was recovering from hypothermia in an area medical facility on Dec. 21, 2020, when he repeatedly asked for his wallet. When medical staff went to get his wallet, they noticed a small plastic bag sticking out of the wallet containing possible methamphetamine. The substance was later tested by the Kansas Bureau of Investigations and determined to be methamphetamine.

“We must fight drug addiction.,” said Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson. “Not only did this medical staff save this man’s life, their attention could help preserve his life. Drugs kill, and we can only hope we can prevent further abuse.”
