A 39-year-old Leavenworth man awaits sentencing on an involuntary manslaughter charge related to a fatal 2023 crash involving a motorcycle, per a release from the office of Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson.

According to court documents, on Oct. 23, 2023, Leavenworth police officers were dispatched to a vehicle collision involving a motorcycle near 150 Muncie Road, near the Leavenworth National Cemetery.

During the investigation, officers determined that Tyler E. Johnson was operating a vehicle and attempted to pass another vehicle while in a no-passing zone. While attempting to pass, Johnson’s vehicle collided with a motorcycle being driven by the victim. The victim died as a result of injuries suffered in the crash.

Johnson pleaded guilty Monday. The court accepted Johnson’s guilty plea and found him guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

“Driving is a privilege, not a right,” Thompson said. “Every time we get behind the wheel, we accept the responsibility to follow the rules of the road and protect the lives around us. One careless decision can have consequences that last a lifetime.

“Always remember, you’re not the only one on the road. Your choices can affect everyone.”

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. Nov. 13.
