Firearms deer season opens today in Kansas

By Staff | Dec 1, 1999

Deer season opens today with more opportunities for hunters than ever before.

The number of permits issued has more than doubled and antlerless deer permits have been increased almost 700 percent in the past five years.

The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks has also enrolled a record 630,000 acres in the Walk-In Hunter program. The regular Kansas firearms deer season is Dec. 1 to Dec. 12.

The following rules might affect area hunters:

All unfilled regular season permits will revert to white-tail antlerless permits during the extended white-tailed antlerless only deer hunt from Dec. 31 to Jan. 9.

Equipment legal during the regular season may be used during the extended season regardless of the restrictions on the original permit. Game tags, statewide archery, unit archery, hunt-own-land and leftover permits will be sold until Jan. 8.

The $10 fee to transfer a hunt-own-land permit is no longer required. Transfer recipients are still required to pay the $30.50 resident permit fee.

Hunt-own-land permits may be transferred to blood relatives and their spouses. Transfer recipients must pay the $30.50 resident permit fee.

Leftover resident permits are valid with appropriate equipment during the archery, muzzleloader or firearms season.

Hunter orange will be required of all hunters including archers during the regular and extended season.

All big game tags must remain with meat until eaten or given to another person. Meat given away must be accompanied by a written notice listing the donor’s name, address, date of donation and permit number.

Kansas residents may apply for as many as two leftover firearms permits through Jan. 7 while supplies last at the Pratt operations office. For more information contact the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, (316) 672-5911.
