A triathlon relay is like a normal triathlon, with a swimming, biking and running element, except in the relay version each team member completes one of the events then hands off a Velcro bracelet to the next person.

There were also true iron men in the event who completed all three legs of the triathlon.

But the iron man trio of Junior Allen Davis and 2000 graduates Brian Meyer and Jordan Smith barely made it to Shawnee Mission Park for the event.

Showing up right before the Sunday morning event, the three discovered they were on the wrong side of the lake. And the swim was the first leg.

“So I had to swim across the lake,” Meyer said.

Ten seconds after arriving on the other side, the race began.

“I took off with about 75 other people and finished tied for second,” Meyer said.

When Meyer handed off to Smith for the biking leg, the team was just five seconds out of first.

Smith, who had never ridden a bike in competition before Sunday, held his team’s position over the 18-mile course.

At the end of the trek, he parked the bike, borrowed from a friend of Meyer’s mother, and handed the bracelet to long-distance specialist Allen Davis.

Davis ran the five miles in 31 minutes, bringing home the fourth-place finish.
