“We have had some good games,” said Mark Zerrer, director of the Tonganoxie Recreation Commission. “Quite a few of the games were really close.”

Play in the league, which is for boys between the ages of 7 and 14, started at the end of May.

The 13-14 age division has seen some good games since then.

Tonganoxie’s team three, sponsored by Powerhouse Graphics, began the season by dropping one to Lansing’s team two, 11-5, on May 23.

Rebounding from that loss, Powerhouse Graphics came out swinging June 2 when they played Tonganoxie’s team one, sponsored by First State Bank & Trust.

Powerhouse Graphics beat their in-town rivals in both games of the doubleheader, winning game one, 12-7 and game two, 10-9.

In the Kaw Valley League only the first game of any doubleheader counts toward the teams’ records, which decide seeding for the post-season tournament in early July.

Powerhouse graphics coach Steve Stein said that he was happy with his team’s performance but that there were points his team needed to work on.

“Our pitching is our downfall,” he said. “We went into a lot of full counts, and gave up too many walks.”

Tonganoxie’s team two, sponsored by Tonganoxie Realty took on Bonner Springs team one May 30 and shut them out, winning 15-0.

The 11-12 age division also saw some good games. On May 30, the City Ford-sponsored team from Tonganoxie took on Lansing, winning 8-5.

Later that night two Tonganoxie teams took the field against one another. In a close game, Mr. Goodcents edged First State Bank & Trust, 13-12.

On June 2, in another close game, City Ford beat Quarles Trash Service, 9-8.

Tonganoxie teams lost several games in the 9-10 age division. They also won about the same number, because five of the division’s six teams are from Tonganoxie.

On May 30, Knights of Columbus beat Vet Vax Inc., 6-2. Later that night, Leavenworth County Co-op beat Midwest Health Center, 10-3.

On June 2, Midwest Health Center beat Himpel Lumber, 5-3. Vet Vax Inc. lost to Linwood, 6-4.

Later that night Leavenworth County Co-op beat Knights of Columbus, 11-4.

In the 7-8 age division, five of the seven teams are from Tonganoxie.

On May 30, Linwood team one beat Evans Real Estate, 7-3.

Later that night, the league saw its first tie. Tonganoxie teams sponsored by the Tonganoxie Recreation Commission and Dr. Richard E. Dean each scored six, which means that each team gets a half-game added to its record.

On June 2, Evans Real Estate beat American Family Insurance, 12-4. Later, Linwood team two beat Tonganoxie’s Kaiser-Slawson by a score of 5-2.
