The event will include a 10- and a 5-kilometer race, as well as a 5-kilometer fun walk.

All three events will begin at the Tonganoxie city library, Third and Bury streets.

The entry fee is $17 per entrant or $28 per couple, with a $10 charge for each additional family member.

Trophies will be awarded to first, second and third places in both the 5- and 10-kilometer runs. Medals will be given to the winners of each division.

Every participant will receive a library run T-shirt.

Other events scheduled for Saturday are a four-on-four sand volleyball tournament and a car show. The volleyball tournament will be held at the Tonganoxie Recreation Commission’s new sand courts. A demolition derby will be held 1 p.m. Sunday.

Co-ed softball league now taking entries
Tonganoxie’s summer co-ed softball league is taking team entries to fill its 10 openings. The deadline is July 9.

The entry fee per team is $175.

Play begins Aug. 6 at the Tonganoxie recreation commission’s field one.

Sunflower games add new events
The 2000 Sunflower games will begin July 21 in Lawrence.

The games, a multi-sport festival for Kansas amateur athletes, features more than 30 events, ranging from archery to wrestling.

Several new events have been added for this year.

Though there has been a three-on-three basketball tournament for several years, a five-on-five basketball tournament, with the championship game to be played at Allen Fieldhouse, has been added this year.

Another new event is a four-person golf tournament, in which a college coach is placed on each team. Roller hockey has been added, and wrestlers will now compete inside the air-conditioned Free State High School.

This year, a free seminar is planned for athletes and coaches on winning with asthma.

Another new addition for this year’s event is that Farm Bureau members receive a $3 discount for entry in individual sports and a $15 discount for all team sports.

Savior Pastoral Center to hold aqua classes
Kansas City Kansas Community College is holding aquatic classes at The Savior Pastoral Center, 126th Street and Parallel Road.

Water aerobics and lap swimming classes for wellness and fitness are under way.

Beginning, intermediate and advanced swimming courses will be held at the center in the fall, as well as water aerobics and lap swimming.

Lifesaving techniques will be covered in the advanced course.

Kansas rivers contain contaminated fish
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks recommends that certain fish caught in the Kansas River be eaten with caution.

The two groups warn fish eaters to only consume a five-ounce serving per month of carp, blue catfish, flathead catfish, channel catfish, freshwater drum, bullhead, sturgeon, buffalo, carpsucker or other sucker species, because the fish, as well as parts of the river, are polluted.

According to the 2000 Kansas Fishing Regulation Summary, the Kansas River from Lawrence to Eudora is contaminated with the insecticide chlordane.

Other rivers on the list to avoid eating from were the Arkansas River from Wichita south through Sumner County, the Little Arkansas River in Wichita, Cowskin Creek through Sedgwick and Sumner Counties, Cow Creek through Hutchinson, the Blue River from U.S Highway 69 to the Missouri state line, Kill Creek from the Spoon River to the Kansas River and the Cottonwood River downstream from Emporia.

Former Bears kicker headlines kicking camp
Former Chicago Bears placekicker Mac Percival is one of the staff that is putting on this year’s Midwest Kicking, Punting and Center Camp.

The camp is July 12 and 13 and will be held at the University of Kansas.

This is the first time the event has been held in Kansas since the camp was founded in 1970.

Besides place-kicking, punting and centering, the program also offers complete instruction in all areas of special teams play.

Percival was the Bears kicker from 1967 to 1973. This is his 24th year with the camp.

The camp is open to placekickers, punters and centers from ages 13 to age 20.

The camp costs $160 for kickers and punters and $110 for centers.
