Some were both.

When two Tonganoxie softball teams butted heads Thursday, that was the case.

Girls
Hancock Realty and B&J Apple market, which play in the 13-14 age division, began play at 8 p.m.

An hour and a half later, the score was 19-18, with Hancock Realty just taking the victory.

“That was a good game,” said Mark Zerrer, director of the Tonganoxie Recreation Commis-sion. “A high-scoring, close game.”

But the girls in the 13-14 age division weren’t the only ones putting on a show for crowds during games last week.

In the 11-12 age division, River City Gardening beat Bonner Springs also on Thursday and also by a score of 19-18.

Across the fairgrounds, at the same time that the two Tonganoxie teams were slugging it out, one of Tonganoxie’s 9-10 age division teams was whipping Edwardsville.

That team, Rising Sun Construction, beat Edwards-ville 15-0.

In the 7-8 age division, Triple Creek Realty beat Edwardsville 9-8 on Thursday. Later that night Chappell Hill Sewing beat in-town rival Henri Masonic Lodge 12-7.

Boys
There were also some exciting games on the boys side.

On June 6, the 13-14 age division team Powerhouse Graphics had to buckle down to beat a tough Bonner Springs team, holding on to win 4-3.

Powerhouse Graphics coach Steve Stein had said the week before that his team needed to work on its defense and pitching. Apparently the work is paying off.

Later that night Tonganoxie Realty beat First State Bank and Trust by a score of 8-4.

The 11-12 age division saw some high-scoring games, with several games exceeding 20 points.

One of those was at 6:30 p.m. on June 6 between Quarles Trash Service and Mr. Goodcents.

Quarles Trash Service won that game 17-10 and then went on to beat First State Bank and Trust, 8-4, on Friday.

Other high scores in that division were First State Bank and Trust over Linwood, 13-9, and Mr. Goodcents over City Ford 17-9.

In the 9-10 age division Linwood beat Midwest Health Center 8-2 on June 6. Later that evening, Knights of Columbus beat Himpel Lumber, 12-2, and Leavenworth City Co-op beat Vet-Vax, Inc. 10-5.

On Friday, Leavenworth City Co-op beat Himpel Lumber, 7-4. Also that evening, Vet-Vax Inc. beat Midwest Health Center 6-1.

The Kaiser-Slawson-sponsored Tonganoxie, a 7-8 age division team, lost to Linwood 9-6 on June 6, but the team recovered nicely on Friday when it beat American Family Insurance, 12-9.

Other scores from that division last week were Evans Real Estate over Dr. Richard E. Dean, 10-5 on June 6 and Evans Real Estate over the Tonganoxie Recreation Commission team, 6-3 on Friday.
