Festival to provide fun for all

By Caroline Trowbridge - | May 31, 2000

If the list of exhibitors is any indication, Tonganoxie Days 2000 should provide lots of fun for all ages.

A total of 58 booths will line Fourth Street, generally from Shawnee to Delaware streets.

“The majority of them are arts and crafts and collectibles,” said Connie Torneden, main organizer of the event. “We do have several food booths, with all sorts of food. We’ve got shaved ice, kettle corn, funnel cakes, roasted peanuts, barbecue, you name it. There should be something to suit everybody. I hope so.”

The annual festival will reach throughout the city. And a shuttle bus will run a route that hits the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds to downtown and on to VFW Park.

The Leavenworth County State Barbecue Championship will be held at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds. Judging for the contest is at noon June 10. In addition, a demolition derby is planned for 1 p.m. June 10 at the fairgrounds.

Torneden said that the Tonganoxie Days events will be on the east side of the fairgrounds, which sustained damage during the May 11 tornado. But electricity should be available in that area, she said.

“We’re all systems go,” Torneden said.

The Friends of the Library’s 10-kilometer run/5-kilometer walk begins at 8 a.m. June 10. Arts and crafts booths will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. downtown, and musical entertainment will be provided throughout the day. Food, games and children and a pet parade also are planned at the festival, which attracts several thousand people to Tonganoxie.

The Country Cruisers Car Show will be held June 10 at Veterans of Foreign Wars Park, along with the ABATE Motorcycle Show.

Leavenworth County sheriff’s officers will set up an Ident-A-Kid booth. Rides again will be offered through the downtown area on a miniature train.

A new event this year a sand volleyball tournament is set to begin at 9 a.m. at the new city park on Main Street behind Community National Bank.

A dance from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. will close the festival. It will be at Shoemaker’s Auction Barn.
