John W. Kelly Sr.

Services for John W. “Jack” Kelly Sr., 83, rural Tonganoxie, were Saturday, May 27, 2000 at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Basehor. Burial was in Holy Angles Cemetery, Basehor.

Mr. Kelly died Tuesday, May 23, 2000, at the Tonganoxie Nursing Center following a long illness. He was born March 14, 1917, in Tonganoxie.

Mr. Kelley lived in rural Tonganoxie his entire life. He graduated from Tonganoxie High School in 1934. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a tech sergeant, serving in the European theater of operations. Following the war, he was employed by Trans World Airlines until his retirement in 1979.

He also owned and operated the Kelly’s service station along U.S. Highway 24-40 from 1952 to 1967. He also farmed. Mr. Kelly was a lifetime member of Holy Angels Catholic Church.

While on assignment during World War II in Scotland, he met and married Elizabeth “Betty” Corbet on Oct. 4, 1945. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include four sons, John W. Kelly Jr., Katy, Texas, Dr. James C. Kelly, Lenexa, Michael E. Kelly, Jarbalo, and Rick A. Kelly, Shawnee; a daughter, Jacki M. Himpel, Tonganoxie; three sisters, Louise Downing, Leavenworth, Ruth Sigman and Gladys McDermott, both of Shawnee; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
