Plans for RV park on hold
Plans for a recreational vehicle park between Tonganoxie and Basehor have been put on hold.
“We’ve asked for a delay, an indefinite continuance,” said Burdel Welsh, a Tonganoxie man and Leavenworth County undersheriff, who had hoped to develop the park on about 50 acres.
The site, at 17211 State Avenue, is on the south side of U.S. 24-40 Highway, about 1.5 miles west of Basehor.
Welsh and his wife had planned that they would operate the park once it opened next spring.
Now those plans are in limbo.
“We’re going to see what Plan B is,” Welsh said.
On a 6-1 vote in early May, the Leavenworth County Planning Commission turned down a rezoning request that was necessary for the park. The county commission was to consider the request last week. Because neighbors submitted protest petitions, all three county commissioners would have to vote to approve the rezoning.
The park has run into a considerable amount of opposition from neighbors, whose concerns include trash, noise and traffic.
