Chieftain track star
keeps on shining

Current Tonganoxie students aren’t the only ones enjoying success in track and field this year. Jackie Wilson, a 1998 Tonganoxie graduate who now attends Johnson County Community College, won eighth place in the hammer throw among junior colleges.

Chieftain softball team
gets 5 all-league picks

Five members of the Tonganoxie softball team earned all-league honors this year.

Outfielder Jenny Crain made first team, and catcher Deaven Workman and outfielder Sarah Subelka made second team.

Heather Beach and Leslie Starcher earned honorable mention.

Coach Mark Mall said that competition was fierce for catchers and that in most other years Workman, who batted .427 this season, would have made the first team.

Here’s a fish story:
One didn’t get away

Michael Wiehe, Bonner Springs, pushed his 30-pound test fishing line to the limit May 20 when he, with the help of fellow fisherman Brian Bishop, pulled in a 46-pound catfish.

The two men caught the fish about 3 p.m. at Leavenworth County State Fishing Lake west of Tonganoxie.

Wiehe said getting the monster a Blue Catfish out of the water was no easy task.

“We had to play with him for about 45 minutes before we got him in the boat,” Wiehe said.

Once Wiehe got the fish reeled up to the side of the boat, Bishop said he stuck his hand inside its mouth to pull it out of the water.

But the two men said they weren’t going to mount the trophy-size fish for display.

“We’ve already cleaned it and ate part of it for supper,” Bishop said.

Catfish only grow about a pound a year, so this fish likely was in its 40s when it was caught.

New volleyball tourney
set for Tonganoxie Days

Watch out for flying volleyballs.

For the first time, the Tonganoxie Recreation Commission is putting on a four-on-four sand volleyball tournament.

The tournament comes as part of Tonganoxie Days and will begin June 10.

The co-ed tournament is limited to people out of high school. Players must be on a team’s roster to participate, and all team rosters must be turned in to the recreation committee office, 635 E. Fourth St., by Thursday.

Spiking will be allowed in tournament play. Other rules will accompany the team schedules.

Baseball camp comes
to county fairgrounds

For the seventh year in a row, Tonganoxie kids have the opportunity to participate in the KCKCC Bluedevil baseball camp.

The camp will be 9 a.m. to noon on June 6 through June 9 at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds, and is for children ages 7 to 18.

Camp participants will work on all areas of the game, including hitting, fielding and pitching.

The camp costs $40. A shirt is $6 more.

Summer ball begins

Summer softball, T-ball and baseball have begun for area children. Go out and support your favorite team when it plays.
