Summer ball, new programs begin for Tonganoxie residents
Summer sports are here again.
But besides the big-time summer sports of softball, baseball and T-ball, the Tonganoxie Recreation Commission has other options available for both children and adults.
Two new programs being offered by the commission this year are a summer day camp for children from 5 years old to those in the fourth grade and a four-on-four sand volleyball tournament for adults out of high school.
Mark Zerrer of the Tonganoxie Recreation Commission said the day camp would give children the chance to learn about things such as crafts and nature conservation.
But the day camp won’t be just about education, Zerrer said. Though there will be a day spent in the library, children also will do things that are meant to be just for fun, such as a day at the pool and games.
“We just wanted to offer something
fun for the young kids to do towards the end of the summer,” Zerrer said.
The day camp will be from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, Wednesday and Friday the weeks of July 17 and July 24. The camp costs $20 and is limited to the first 50 who sign up.
The volleyball tournament comes as part of Tonganoxie Days and was put together as a way of christening Tonganoxie’s new sand volleyball court, which is yet to be completed. The court is near Community National Bank.
“We’re venturing into uncharted water, but there is a good chance it will be successful,” Zerrer said.
But not, Zerrer said, as successful as the summer ball program.
“It’s the biggest by far,” he said. “There are close to 500 participating.”
Those 500 children are divided among 12 softball, nine T-ball and 17 baseball teams.
Basehor, Bonner Springs, Edwardsville, Lansing, Linwood and Tonganoxie all have teams in the competitions.
Meeting rescheduled
The Tonganoxie Recreation Commission has moved its meeting from this Thursday to 7:30 p.m. June 8 at the Tonganoxie Public Library.
