Editorial: What’s up with youth in our community?

By Staff | Jul 11, 2001

What is it with these young people in Tonganoxie?

Whatever it is, we should be proud.

First a group of youngsters approached the city council with their well-researched and well-planned idea for a skate park. They won council support and the city is moving ahead with the project.

And then in May, Tonganoxie High School junior John Bretthauer asked the local school board to consider starting a golf program at the school. On Monday, school board members OK’d Bretthauer’s request. Next spring, the school will tee off its first golf team.

Bretthauer went to the school board, only after conducting research on the idea.

These young people should be commended. They’ve seen a need in the community or in their school and they’ve taken action.

What a wonderful way to approach life to see a problem or a need and take action. It’s so much better than sitting around on one’s hands, complaining.

The parents and teachers who’ve helped guide these young people should be applauded for the support they’ve given. But it’s been the work of these tenacious youngsters that’s made these positive things happen.
