Abuse of power!

Those are the only words that come to mind when I think of the city council, the mayor and the city manager’s decision to order city employees to boycott three Tonganoxie businesses: Lenahan’s Hardware, Schilling Electric and Pelzl Do It Best Hardware. Even more telling is the reason for the action: They didn’t like what the businesses were saying about them. What a great way to grow a community! Doesn’t the first amendment to the Constitution guarantee the right of free speech?

Maybe the city council, the mayor and the city manager should correctly use their power to serve the people who elected and hired them instead of serving themselves. Enforcement of the ordinances that prohibit the accumulation of unlicensed cars on property and cleaning up the eyesores on the corners of County Road 5 and Laming Road and Kansas Highway 16 and U.S. Highway 24-40 would be a great start.
