TJHS stretching streak for eighth-grade team

By Staff | Dec 11, 2002

A perfect season is one tournament away from becoming a reality.

The Tonganoxie Junior High eighth grade A team defeated Lansing, 43-14, and Lexington, 41-14. The Warriors finish out the season this week with the Piper Tournament.

Against Lansing, Tonganoxie pounced on the Lions early, and then entered the second half with a 24-5 lead. Rebecca Bogard, Ali Pistora and Kezia Huseman helped the Warriors tally 21 steals. The team also had 35 rebounds, led by Sara Kotowske and Shannon Smith.

TJHS coach John Korb said he was pleased with having only 11 turnovers against LJHS.

Scoring for the Warriors were: Pistora 11, Rachel Bogard 6, Holly Heintzelman 6, Aimee Riddle 6, Kotowske 5, Smith 4, Rebecca Bogard 3, Alex Kissinger 2.

Against De Soto-Lexington, TJHS pulled down 40 rebounds and tallied 25 steals against the visitors.

Lexington also had just three free throws in the first half.

“I was extremely pleased with the intensity we had on defense against Lexington,” Korb said. “It shows what can happen when you have an off shooting night and are still able to score points.

“Rebecca Bogard really picked up her defense, the high point being when she went diving for a loose ball, which helped set the tone for the rest of the team. It truly was our best half of team defense all season.”

Ali Pistora and Rachel Bogard led the team in rebounding with seven each, while Shannon Smith and Sarah Kotowske each had five. Rebecca Bogard and Pistora led the team in assists.

The B team finished its season with wins against Lansing and Lexington also. TJHS defeated Lansing, 33-25, and then beat Lexington, 28-4. The Warriors ended the season 8-2. Scoring for Tonganoxie against Lansing were Tana Lloyd 9, Casey Davis 8, Jennifer Wagner 6, Elizabeth Seymour 4, Crystal Jordan 3, Laura Schuster 3.
