By Shawn Linenberger - | Jan 16, 2002

It’s becoming a tradition.

No. 8 Van Horn upset the top-seeded Oskaloosa Bears 69-66 in the first round of the Tonganoxie Invitational on Monday.

Tonganoxie upset the Osklaloosa last season, sending the Bears to the consolation side of the bracket for the second consecutive season.

Van Horn’s Charles Davis hit a driving jumper with less than a minute remaining that broke a tie and put the Falcons ahead to stay 68-66. Lucas Hall added a free throw in the waning seconds for the three-point margin of victory.

Oskaloosa had a couple chances to tie the game after Van Horn turnovers but they couldn’t get the shots to fall.

Davis led the scoring for Van Horn with 22 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter. Michael Lang added 22 points for the Falcons. Travis Newell and Blake Reed paced Oskaloosa with 26 points and 25 points respectively. Newell drained eight three-point goals during the game.

Oskaloosa will play Pleasant Ridge at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Van Horn takes on Bonner Springs at 6 p.m. Friday.

Bonner Springs had a strong second half in a first-round victory against Pleasant Ridge.

The Braves won, 77-64, in the only other first-round game Monday.

Sean Birdsong led Bonner Springs with 21 points, including 19 in the second half as the Braves pulled away from the Rams. The game was tight with the score tied six times and the lead changing nine times in the first half.

A five-point scoring run by Birdsong late in the third period allowed the Braves to take a 57-48 lead into the fourth period.
