Hassinger to cheer at Pittsburg State
Samantha Hassinger’s cheering days aren’t finished yet.
The outgoing senior Tonganoxie cheerleader tried out for the Pittsburg State cheer squad on April 21 and was later named to the squad.
“There were a lot of tears,” Hassinger said. “It was a very stressful weekend.”
About 20 girls and 10 boys competed in the tryout. Hassinger made the squad of 12, but only seven members receive scholarships.
Hassinger wasn’t one of them.
“I can always get one next year,” she said.
The senior also looked at Kansas and Fort Hays State. She planned to tryout at KU, but the Jayhawks’ tryout was the same day as Pittsburg’s.
Starting June 8, Hassinger will practice at Pitt State every other weekend until the school year begins in August. Practice will be two- to three-hour sessions on weekdays after that.
