Tonganoxie girls falter against Chanute
Tonganoxie played eventual Anderson County Invitational champ Burlington to its closest contest during the early season tournament last week.
But the Chieftains followed up a strong game on Thursday with a frustrating consolation game on Friday.
Chanute dropped Tonganoxie, 45-40, as THS ended the tournament in fourth place with a 1-2 showing.
Tonganoxie built a 16-5 advantage after the first quarter and still had an advantage going to the fourth quarter at 30-26, but the Comets outscored Tonganoxie, 19-10, and finished third in the tournament.
“We just had a letdown in the second half,” THS coach Randy Kraft said.
The Chieftains had their third different leading scorer in as many games as Madison Weller had a game-high 12. Ali Pistora also was in double figures with 10.
The Chieftains opened their Kaw Valley League schedule Tuesday against Basehor-Linwood and will take on Mill Valley at home Friday.
Kraft said the Jaguars will have a large group of sophomores back this season.
“It could be a tough game for us,” Kraft said.
Tonganoxie won the first meeting last year, but the Chieftains were victims to a late-season Mill Valley winning streak.
Burlington 57, Tonganoxie 50
Tonganoxie played the state-ranked Wildcats tough throughout, but couldn’t hold on in the semifinal game.
THS coach Randy Kraft said the team played well defensively, but couldn’t hold on late in the physical game. Burlington had a closer matchup Thursday after scoring 86 points in its quarterfinal.
Burlington eventually won the Anderson County tournament Friday with a 57-43 victory against St. Mary’s.
Sarah Holliday led the Chieftains with 13 points against the Wildcats.
