Lions smother THS for season sweep

By Shawn Linenberger - | Feb 26, 2003

Tonganoxie High met its most familiar foe again Friday, but Lansing handed the Chieftains a third disheartening defeat this season.

THS actually was successful with an up-tempo style in the first quarter, as the teams finished the period knotted at 18.

But a gang-busting Lansing effort in the second quarter translated into an eventual loss for Tonganoxie. The Lions outscored the Chieftains, 25-10 in the second and the Chieftains didn’t launch a challenge after that. Lansing eventually claimed a 67-51 win, sweeping three regular-season games. The game marked the first time this season the teams didn’t reach overtime.

“Any time you meet someone that many times, it’s a matter of executing,” THS coach David Walker said.

On Friday, Lansing followed through big-time.

The Lions were clicking from the perimeter, on the inside and with a press that forced plenty of Chieftains miscues and easy Lansing buckets. LHS also made 4-of-5 free throw attempts, compared to Tonganoxie’s cold 6-of-14 effort.

The Chieftains likely will encounter Lansing again in substate. The Lions should have the No. 1 seed when the tournament begins next week, but Walker isn’t ready to discuss that possible matchup.

“We’re not concerned with that just yet,” Walker said.

After Tuesday’s final home game against Immaculata in Leavenworth, the Chieftains travel Friday to Bonner Springs for the regular season finale.

Despite being in the midst of a nine-game losing streak, the Chieftains have found a spark with Shane Howard. The sophomore poured in 20 for a game-high score Friday.

“He’s starting to feel more comfortable with things and he’s being more assertive,” Walker said about Howard.

Records weren’t all that different when Tonganoxie and Perry-Lecompton met Feb. 18. The Chieftains were 4-12, while the Kaws stood at 6-10.

But when the teams met, they were coming from completely different directions. Tonganoxie had a seven-game skid; Perry-Lecompton sported a two-game winning streak.

The Kaws won easily, 62-38, holding the advantage in every quarter. PLHS extended its streak to four games after a 55-44 win against Santa Fe Trail on Friday as well and now stands at 8-10 overall with two games left.

Jacob Walker led Tonganoxie in the losing effort with nine.
