After committing 15 errors in two games April 28 at Santa Fe Trail, the Chieftains came back for a home date with Perry-Lecompton and committed only one error in each game of its softball doubleheader.

Trail blanked the Chieftains in both games and PLHS did the same in game one with a 3-0 victory, but the Chieftains came back with a 5-1 victory in game two.

In the first game, Tonganoxie trailed 1-0 after one inning and looked to be out of the second with two out and one on. The Chieftains appeared to have their third out on a routine grounder, but the runner was ruled safe. In the next at-bat, pitcher Katie Jeannin gave up a triple and the Chieftains trailed 3-0. Jeannin shut down the Kaws for the remainder of the game, but Tonganoxie couldn’t muster any runs.

In the second game, Perry-Lecompton again opened with a run in the first, but the Chieftains finally started producing runs. A run in the second and third would be all the Chieftains would need, although a three-run sixth didn’t hurt in generating some runs the team has lacked recently.

“We made some good adjustments,” THS coach Mark Mall said.

Senior Jessica Pearson highlighted the afternoon with a 3-for-4 outing in game two.

She also had an RBI, while Michelle McWilliams was 2-for-3 and Laura Jeannin 1-for-2 with two runs.

“I don’t think Jessica Pearson had a bad hit in both games,” Mall said.

Tonganoxie played Tuesday at Lansing and will play De Soto on Thursday at home. Lansing is in Tonganoxie’s regional. Results from those games will appear in next week’s edition of The Mirror.

“Every game’s really big for us now,” Mall said.
