Regional softball seeds not planted quite yet
A double threat of Jessica helped Tonganoxie prevail against De Soto on Thursday.
Jessica Bogard and Jessica Pearson each went 2-for-3 against De Soto in game 1, helping the Chieftains to a 3-1 victory.
“That’s why I’ve had her leading off most of the year,” Tonganoxie coach Mark Mall said about Bogard. “Bogard has been really consistent for us all year long.”
As for Pearson, she has sizzled with the bat since a May 1 home date with Perry-Lecompton.
“Her bat has really picked up,” Mall said.
Minutes after game one ended, school officials called the second game because of a nearing thunderstorm.
With the victory, the Chieftains moved to 8-9 overall and 4-4 in the Kaw Valley League.
Bogard registered a double, a single, a walk, a stolen base and a run as she went 2-for-3 from the plate. Pearson, meanwhile, pounded out a double and a triple. She also scored a run and tallied an RBI.
Tonganoxie had two other hits in the game as Katie Jeannin went 1-for-4 and Karley Bennett was 1-for-2.
Laura Jeannin and Bennett had the team’s other two RBI.
The Chieftains struck early, scoring two in the first and one in the third. The Wildcats answered with a run in the sixth, but by then it was too late.
Katie Jeannin allowed four hits and struck out three in the win.
The second game was rescheduled for Tuesday, but the game didn’t meet The Mirror’s deadline.
Tonganoxie completes the regular season at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at home against Bonner Springs. All games before today will count toward regional pairings, but the Chieftains likely will be anywhere from a No. 3 seed to a No. 5 seed. Other teams in the regional to be played next week in Hoyt are Atchison, Holton Royal Valley (Hoyt), Lansing, Jeff West, Perry-Lecompton and Hayden (Topeka).
