Tonganoxie to play host to baseball regionals
Come next week, one state team will have to travel through Tonganoxie to reach the coveted tournament.
With a Class 4A baseball regional scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Monday in Tonganoxie, one of eight teams will advance to the state tournament May 30-31 at the Mulvane Sports Complex in Mulvane.
On Monday, quarterfinals will be played at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Tuesday’s semifinal games tentatively will be played at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. with the championship starting at around 7 p.m.
Teams playing in the tournament with Tonganoxie will be Basehor-Linwood, Bishop Ward, De Soto, Eudora, Mill Valley, Piper and Spring Hill.
The Chieftains likely will play Basehor-Linwood or Eudora. At 2-16, Tonganoxie has two games left with a doubleheader today at Bonner Springs.
THS played a makeup game against Jeff West on Monday, but dropped both games.
Tonganoxie trailed 4-3 after five innings, but a two-run homer in the sixth doomed the Chieftains and they went on to lose, 7-3. The Tigers then shut down THS in game two, 9-0.
“We had opportunities,” assistant coach Andy Gilner said. “But they faded on us fast.”
Those losses came after Tonganoxie dropped a heartbreaker Friday near De Soto. The Wildcat clung to a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the sixth when they added another run on a throwing error by catcher Chuck Riddle.
The senior, however, came back with a bunt in the top of the seventh.
Shane Cooper and Ross Starcher reached base before Riddle.
The Chieftains appeared to be in great shape after Cooper scored on the error and runners were on second and third with nobody out.
But after a called strikeout, the De Soto pitcher caught a line drive from Marc Heninger and Starcher was doubled up on third, ending the inning.
