Girls pound Basehor-Linwood for ninth victory

By Shawn Linenberger - | Feb 11, 2004

THS coach Randy Kraft wasn’t sure Monday how last week’s school cancellations would affect his team’s performances this week.

“We’ll find out tomorrow,” Kraft said with a smile, referring to Tuesday’s game against Piper.

Last week, the Chieftains missed three days of school and had one game postponed.

“I hated the layoff because I felt we were starting to get things together,” Kraft said.

But the THS coach also noted how the break could be beneficial.

“Sometimes a layoff gets you a little rejuvenated and gets you excited to play,” Kraft said.

The Chieftains will need to be fully rested for the week to come.

With Friday’s game against Santa Fe Trail postponed, the Chieftains have a three-game schedule this week. Tonganoxie played Piper on Tuesday, travels to Mill Valley on Friday and plays the makeup game against Santa Fe Trail on Saturday.

Despite last week’s shortened schedule, Tonganoxie did record a victory Feb. 3 at Basehor-Linwood.

The Chieftains routed Basehor-Linwood, 58-33, as nine Tonganoxie players scored.

Tonganoxie’s Katie Jeannin bettered cousin Alex Jeannin — Katie Jeannin scored a game-high 12; Alex Jeannin scored one point for the Bobcats.

With the victory, Tonganoxie earned a season sweep of Basehor-Linwood and improved to 9-4 overall and 5-1 in the Kaw Valley League.

“We didn’t play with a lot of emotion, but we executed well,” Kraft said.

Addie Heim also was in double figures with 10 for THS.

Saturday’s clash with Santa Fe Trail could be a battle for first place in the KVL. The Chargers were undefeated in league play as of Monday. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. Saturday in Phil Lobb Gymnasium.
