Playing Saturday in a make-up game against Santa Fe Trail, the Chieftains forced the Chargers into overtime and outscored SFT in the extra frame for a 63-57 win.

The Chieftains trailed 27-19 at the half, but stormed back and tied the game with less than a minute to go on a Billy Baska three-pointer.

In the overtime, the Chieftains outscored the Chargers, 15-7, and improved to 6-9 on the season.

“This was a confidence builder,” THS coach David Walker said. “We didn’t give up. We kept fighting and found a way to win.”

Tonganoxie dropped a 44-43 heartbreaker to Piper on Feb. 10 at PHS before state-ranked Mill Valley throttled the Chieftains on Friday in Shawnee.

Against the Pirates, the Chieftains opened with a 14-5 lead, but couldn’t hold on.

In the Mill Valley game, the Jaguars made 8-of-12 three-point shots in the first half and never looked back on their way to a 77-46 victory.

Sam Mitchell led the Chieftains against Piper with 19, while Shane Howard was top scorer against Mill Valley with 13 and SFT with 17.

On Saturday, Walker was thankful to the fans who did make it to the game for an irregular afternoon game.

“The people who were there helped us out greatly,” Walker said.

THS played Perry-Lecompton on Tuesday in Tonganoxie and then plays back-to-back games again Thursday and Friday.

The Chieftains will play St. Mary’s on Thursday and Lansing on Friday. The St. Mary’s game is rescheduled from the Central Heights Invitational in early December, while the LHS game is a regularly scheduled league game.

Next week, the Chieftains finish out the season against Immaculata on Tuesday in Leavenworth and at home Feb. 27 against Bonner Springs.
