Sims nabs fourth at Sunflower Hills
Cody Sims won the Wyandotte County Junior Golf Championship last summer by shooting an 80 at Sunflower Hills in Bonner Springs.
Sims couldn’t quite match that performance Saturday at the same venue.
The Tonganoxie junior shot an 85, good for fourth place at the Sunflower Hills Classic. Sims finished six strokes behind individual champion Bobby Carrico from Basehor-Linwood.
Sims was in reach of the individual title, but a nine-stroke performance on hole No. 2 proved the junior’s downfall. Sims shot a 44 on the front nine, but came back strong on the back nine with a 41.
As a team, Tonganoxie finished last out of seven squads with a 396. Immaculata won the meet, thanks to Chase Day and Derek Kooser. The teammates tied for fifth overall.
For Tonganoxie, Adam Reetz was the squad’s second-best finisher. He shot a 101. Zach Pistora and Chris Smith both shot a 105. Brad Robertson hit a 118.
“We have a lot of work to do,” THS assistant coach Jon Jacques said. “But it’s one of the better performances as a team at Sunflower we’ve had. And I think we’re taking a step in the right direction.”
Some early-season tournaments haven’t been synonymous with ideal conditions in recent years for the Chieftains, but Saturday was beautiful — no rain, no wind and the temperature was just right.
“It was perfect,” Jacques said. “No wind. It wasn’t too hot and it wasn’t too cold.”
The Chieftains next will compete Wednesday in a dual with Sumner Academy at Painted Hills Golf Course, 7101 Parallel Pkwy., Kansas City, Kan.
