Positions still remain open

By Shawn Linenberger - | Jun 15, 2005

Coaching positions at Tonganoxie High still haven’t been filled in baseball, softball and soccer.

The Tonganoxie school board on Monday released a list of coaches hired for next school year, but it still has a few vacancies, including that of head baseball and assistant baseball coach, held last year by Andy Gilner and Michael Gilner respectively.

Jeremy Goebel, an assistant coach last season, has been hired again this year.

When asked Tuesday about his future with the baseball team, Andy Gilner declined to comment.

“I won’t make any announcements until they say anything,” Andy Gilner said.

The softball coaching staff already has two positions filled, that of junior varsity coaches Merri Samuels and Diane Titterington. Debbie Himpel and Craig Lohman became co-varsity coaches midway through last season. Samuels still was the varsity head coach, but reduced her duties for health reasons at midseason. Whether Himpel and Lohman will coach again next season is uncertain.

The school also is in search of a head soccer after Luke Denney recently resigned to take a teaching position in a Kansas City, Mo., school district.

Despite some positions still open, the board did fill two coaching vacancies Monday.

Lindsey Graf was named an assistant girls basketball coach at Monday’s school board meeting. Graf, a graduate of Leavenworth High, also played collegiately at Friends University in Wichita. Tonganoxie High athletics director Brandon Parker said she also coached the Friends junior varsity squad and most recently was the head coach at Wichita-Trinity, which is a private school. In addition, Graf has coached during summers for a Mid-America Youth Basketball team.

“She’s been around basketball all her life,” Graf said.

Graf joins coach Randy Kraft and assistant coaches John Jacques and Craig Lohman on the girls staff.

Graf replaces Sue Walker on the basketball staff.

Phil Loomis, who formerly taught in the Topeka-Seaman school district, will be an assistant on the boys basketball staff. Loomis joins coach David Walker and fellow assistant Matt Bond on the boys staff. Loomis replaces Andy Gilner on the basketball staff.

Parker said the remaining three sports will have their coaching staffs filled at a special June 23 school board meeting.
