By Shawn Linenberger - | Oct 26, 2005

The McLouth volleyball team couldn’t capitalize on the two wins it secured at its home volleyball invitational Oct. 15.

The Bulldogs defeated Bishop Seabury of Lawrence and Maur Hill of Atchison in that tournament.

On Saturday, McLouth competed in a Class 3A substate tournament in Silver Lake and faced No. 2 Pleasant Ridge, which entered the substate at 23-8. McLouth, the No. 7 seed, was eliminated in two games.

In the substate match, junior Lena Poll had four blocks, 11 kills and three serves. Senior Devyn Roberts had four blocks, seven kills and four serves.

Coach Amy Bergman said other top performers included senior Heaven Mils, who had seven kills and eight serves.

Senior Catherine Gunther registered three kills and two assists, while sophomore Abby Annis had six kills and two serves. Senior Holly Kitterman had seven serves.

Junior Rachael Thompson led the team in assists with 20. She also had nine serves. Senior Audrey Deeken had 18 assists.

Bergman also complimented three of her players for their passing ability. She called the passes “perfect.” Libero Sam Farris had five, Kitterman three and Mills two of Bergman’s “perfect” passes.

Off the bench, Bergman said sophomore Leah Hoffhines and senior Christine Glover “provided amazing support.”

The Bulldogs ended the season with an 8-24 record. Rossville won its own substate tournament. Rossville enters the state tournament as the No. 2 seed with a 34-1 record.
