Basehor overpowers THS team in second half
Derek O’Brien pumped his fists after taking a second shot at the goal in the seventh minute of the second half Thursday against Basehor-Linwood at Chieftain Park.
With Basehor-Linwood’s goalie lying on the ground, O’Brien shot the ball into the goal and made the score 2-1.
After falling behind in the first half, Tonganoxie made a shot after several other shots failed. The Chieftains looked to be in business, but the Bobcats made sure the Chieftains got no closer.
Basehor-Linwood scored again in the 20th and 30th minutes for a 4-1 victory that dropped Tonganoxie to 0-2 on the season.
“We had good opportunities, we just couldn’t get the ball in the net,” THS coach Kenneth Lott said.
Tonganoxie lost its first game of the season last week to Bonner Springs, 4-2.
Lott said his team had improved since that season opener.
“I think we’re starting to look for the ball,” Lott said. That’s the key thing.”
Tonganoxie was in a prime position when O’Brien scored his goal. Its offense was getting more shots. And the Chieftain defense was more solid.
When Basehor-Linwood scored its third goal, the ball rattled around among Tonganoxie and Basehor-Linwood players before a shot hit the crossbar and dropped into the goal just behind THS goalie David Hassinger.
It was a freak play that frustrated Hassinger, who made several saves in the game. Lott praised Hassinger’s efforts, saying that he had “an excellent game.”
Lott also was impressed with the work of two other Chieftains.
“We had excellent play from Alex and Josh Nowasell,” Lott said. “They probably were our players of the game.”
Tonganoxie played Tuesday at Lansing before returning home for Thursday’s home game against Perry-Lecompton.
Look for reports from both soccer games in next week’s edition of The Mirror.
“We’re building,” Lott said. “Not as fast as I’d like, but we’re building.”
Tonganoxie then travels to Kansas City the next week to take on a new foe — Turner High.
The Chieftains will play Tuesday at Turner before coming home Thursday to take on Piper at Chieftain Park.
