THS eyes Rim Rock Invitational

By Shawn Linenberger - | Sep 14, 2005

Freshman Matt Brock continued to lead the Tonganoxie boys cross country team at the Maur Hill Invitational on Thursday in Atchison. Sophomore Christy Weller was doing the same on the girls side — until chest pains forced her to quit midway through the race.

Weller, who has been experiencing occasional chest pain, pulled out of the race after the symptoms reoccurred in Atchison.

THS coach Phil Williams said that “a couple times this fall she’s had a severe pain in her chest.”

Williams said doctors aren’t sure what is causing her pains. Dehydration and a cramp in the diaphragm are possible reasons for her ailment, “but nobody’s real sure,” Williams said.

“I think she’s going to practice,” Williams said. “I think we’re going to try and see what happens.”

As for Weller’s teammates, the squad finished the 18-team meet in fourth place. Jackson Heights won the meet with 59 points, while Benton (Mo.) finished second (77) and Doniphan West (79) was third. Tonganoxie had 84 in the meet.

Jennifer Wagner finished the meet in seventh place with a 13:40 time. Megan Holton placed placed 16th (14:10), Kayla Leffert placed 19th (14:25) and Kaitlyn Saathoff placed 26th (14:44).

“Kayla Leffert improved a lot,” Williams said.

Also finishing for Tonganoxie were Ashli Koch in 27th (14:45) and Kezia Huseman in 33rd (15:00).

“Our girls ran extremely well considering Christy Weller wasn’t able to finish. She would have finished first or really close to first,” Williams said. “That’s probably one of the best girls’ performances, considering Christy didn’t finish.”

The girls meet had 70 runners competing.

On the boys side, Brock again led the Chieftains. He placed second with a 17:20 time and led THS to a third-place finish. Benton (Mo.) won the meet with 28, while Jeff West tallied 45. Tonganoxie had 68 for third.

“I don’t think our boys as a group ran quite as well as they did the first meet,” Williams said. “We were more spread out.”

Colt Coffin placed 18th with an 18:28 time. David Powell wasn’t far behind, taking 21st in 18:34.

Justin Smith finished 27th (18:36), John Davis 34th (19:04) and Michael Shaw 38th (19:16).

“Colt Coffin ran well,” Williams said. “We need to get some of those other runners up a lot further.”

Tonganoxie’s varsity team next will compete at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Rim Rock Invitational at Rim Rock Farm between McLouth and Lawrence.

The meet attracts teams from across the Midwest for the marquee high school event.

“I think it’s a good experience to get kids used to a tough atmosphere and it’s sort of like a state meet,” Williams said.

Before the varsity teams run at Rim Rock, the junior varsity squads will compete Thursday at the McLouth Invitational. The meet begins at 4 p.m. at the Bulldog Sports Complex in McLouth.
