Tonganoxie to host 2007 4A substate
Tonganoxie will be the site for Class 4A boys and girls substate basketball tournaments Feb. 26-March 3, the Kansas State High School Activities Association announced recently.
Each spring, schools officials submit requests to host substate tournaments the following year.
Tonganoxie High athletics director Brandon Parker said Monday that he has sent in requests in the past, but this is the first year THS has been granted a substate basketball tournament since Parker became the athletics director in 2002. Tonganoxie last hosted a substate tournament in 1998. THS also advanced to state that year.
“I think the kids are really excited,” Parker said. “We’re excited to host here, and the kids enjoy being able to play on their home court for substate.”
During the off-season, the gymnasium was renovated, as the north wall was taken out and bleacher seats were added. Other improvements include a new floor and new floor-level seating, among other improvements.
Parker said he thought the renovations helped the school land the tournaments.
“I would definitely say so,” Parker said.
Teams joining THS at substate will be Baldwin, Basehor-Linwood, De Soto, Eudora, Bishop Ward, Piper and St. James Academy of Lenexa.
Other substate sites will be Buhler, Concordia, Fort Scott, Girard, Goodland, Hiawatha and Rose Hill.
Winners of the boys and girls substate tournaments will advance to the state tournament ,March 7-10 in Salina.
McLouth, meanwhile, has been assigned to a 3A substate at Benedictine College in Atchison. Maur Hill-Mount Academy in Atchison will host the boys and girls tournaments. Joining MH-MA and McLouth will be Pleasant Ridge, Atchison County, Horton, Oskaloosa, Kansas City Christian and Jefferson County North.
Other schools slated to host 3A substates are: Cherryvale, Garden Plain, Halstead, Kismet-Southwestern Heights, Phillipsburg, Richmond-Central Heights and Sabetha.
