TJHS takes second at tourney
The Tonganoxie Junior High eighth-grade basketball team had a big stretch of games last week.
The Warriors went 3-1 and finished second in the Lexington Trails Tournament.
Tonganoxie (7-6) defeated Basehor-Linwood and Xavier of Leavenworth before defeating Perry-Lecompton in the tournament. The Warriors then fell to the host school, which is in the De Soto school district. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for TJHS.
Tonganoxie vs. Basehor
Against Basehor-Linwood, Feb. 13 on the road, Tonganoxie prevailed in a see-saw game, 38-36. Tonganoxie’s Keaton Schaffer hit a free throw that put the Warriors up by two with four seconds left. Tonganoxie forced a turnover on the ensuing in-bounds play and held on for the win.
Schaffer scored a game-high 17 and added 13 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 assists and 2 blocked shots.
John Emery was second-leading scorer with 14. He also had a rebound and an assist. Also scoring were Preston Putthoff with 3 (1 rebound), Brett Koch with 3 (3 rebounds 3 steals, 1 assist) and D.J. Lindsey with 2 (1 steal). Dane Gonser had 4 rebounds and Antony Myers 2 in the win.
Tonganoxie vs. Xavier
Tonganoxie followed up the win against Basehor-Linwood with a rout of Xavier of Leavenworth on Thursday. TJHS led, 16-0, after one quarter and coasted to a 46-7 win.
Schaffer had his sixth double-double of the year with 15 points and 13 rebounds. He also had 2 steals and 2 assists. Emery again was the No. 2 TJHS scorer with 12. He also registered 2 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 assists. Lindsey scored 6 (2 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 assists), while Kyle Johnson had 4 (2 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 assist). Dylan Pendleton also had 4 (7 rebounds) in the win. Koch and Gonser finished out the scoring. Koch had 2 (1 rebound, 2 steals, 3 assists), while Gonser had 1 (5 rebounds, 1 steal). Jason Espeland recorded 5 rebounds, Myers 4 and Jacobs 3. Myers recorded 4 rebounds and Jacobs had 3.
Tonganoxie vs. Perry
On Saturday, the team played in the four-team Lexington Tournament.
In the first game, Tonganoxie defeated Perry-Lecompton, 51-42, in a rematch of a game Perry won earlier in the year.
Shaffer scored 17 with 2 rebounds, 2 steals and 6 assists. Emery and Gonser also scored in double figures with 13 and 10 respectively. Emery also had 4 steals and an assist, while Gonser grabbed 6 rebounds. Myers scored 7 (2 rebounds, 1 steal, 3 blocked shots), while Kyle Johnson and Lindsey each scored 2. Lindsey also had a rebound and 2 steals.
In other statistics, Jacobs and Pendleton each had 3 rebounds and a steal. Koch had an assist, a steal and 3 blocked shots, while Putthoff had a steal.
TJHS vs. Lexington Trails
The Warriors’ winning streak came to a screeching halt with a 56-33 loss to Lexington Trails in the tournament championship.
Schaffer was Tonganoxie’s lone scorer in double figures with 16. He also snagged 7 rebounds, had 3 steals, an assist and a blocked shot. Lindsey and Emery each scored 6. Lindsey also had 2 steals, while Emery had a rebound and a steal.
Tonganoxie finished out its scoring with Koch scoring 3 (2 steals) and Jacobs 2 (1 rebound). Gonser grabbed 3 rebounds and had a steal, while Myers secured two rebounds, a steal and had two blocked shots. Johnson had 2 steals and a rebound. Putthoff and Espeland each had a rebound.
The Warriors finish their season this week with the Basehor-Linwood Tournament. TJHS played Tuesday and plays again Thursday. Also in the tournament are Monticello, Basehor-Linwood and Piper.
