Tonganoxie to play home opener Friday

By Shawn Linenberger - | Jan 4, 2006

The Tonganoxie High girls will look to remain perfect this season with its basketball schedule resuming this week.

The Tonganoxie boys, meanwhile, will be eyeing their first win of the season.

On the girls side, the 5-0 Chieftains played Tuesday at Lansing. LHS entered the game with a 2-0 record in league play and a 3-2 record overall. The Chieftains were 1-0 in Kaw Valley League play heading into the contest. On Friday, the THS girls will play in their home opener against Mill Valley, which is 0-2 in league play and 1-2 overall.

The Tonganoxie girls team currently is ranked No. 3 in the state in Class 4A. THS will look to improve on its last game of the season, a 44-43 win Dec. 16 on the road. Tonganoxie had to rally to beat Bonner Springs. The Chieftains shot just less than 30 percent against the Braves and committed 27 turnovers in the narrow victory.

Tonganoxie’s boys also played Lansing on Tuesday at LHS. The Lions were 1-1 in the KVL and 2-3 overall heading into the contest, while the Chieftains were 0-1 in the KVL and 0-5 overall.

THS will play its second home game of the season Friday when Mill Valley comes to town. The Jaguars entered the new year with a 2-0 league record and 3-0 overall record.

Tonganoxie’s first home game, Dec. 20, almost was the team’s first victory of the season. Playing against De Soto, the Chieftains had a 10-point first-half lead, but couldn’t hang on in the second half as the Wildcats’ perimeter game helped De Soto to a 64-49 victory.
