Boatwright to speak at upcoming event

By Shawn Linenberger - | Jan 18, 2006

Tonganoxie’s biggest celebrity will speak to local residents next Wednesday at Tonganoxie High School.

Danni Boatwright, who last month won “Survivor: Guatemala,” will be a guest speaker at the Tonganoxie Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting.

The event, co-sponsored by the city, will begin at 7 p.m. at the THS auditorium.

Cheryl Hanback, a chamber board member, said Monday that the chamber would run through some of its business “rather quickly” before introducing Boatwright.

Hanback expects Boatwright to speak for about a half-hour.

A question-and-answer session, as well as a reception for Boatwright, will follow her speech.

“We’ll have plenty of time for question and answer,” Hanback said.

The event is open to the public.

And during the reception, Boatwright will be available for autographs and to speak with fans, Hanback said.

“We really want the city to turn out for it,” Hanback said.

Mayor Dave Taylor is one city official who is eager to hear Boatwright speak next week at the high school.

He is expecting a crowd to attend the event.

“I think we’ll have a good turnout,” Taylor said.

Boatwright was the talk of Tonganoxie after she was named the Sole Survivor of the CBS reality series on Dec. 11.

A large contingency of family, friends and fans watched the show at Bichelmeyer’s Steakhouse that night as Boatwright beat out Stephenie LaGrossa and was awarded a check for $1 million. Boatwright’s winnings amounted to roughly $600,000, after taxes. Boatwright beat out 17 other contestants to become the top survivor.

Since she was voted the winner of the reality series on Dec. 11, Boatwright appeared on several television shows, including “The Early Show,” “Live with Regis and Kelly” and “The Tony Danza Show.”

Boatwright, a 1993 Tonganoxie High School graduate, was Miss Teen USA second-runner up in 1992 and Miss USA runner-up in 1996.

She also has done modeling around the world and has been a radio host for a Kansas City sports talk show.
