Obituary: Gertrude L. Courtney
Mass of Christian Burial for Gertrude L. Courtney, 98, formerly of McLouth, was held Monday, March 20, 2006, at St. Joseph of the Valley Church in Leavenworth. Burial was at Springdale Friends Cemetery, Springdale.
Mrs. Courtney died Thursday, March 16, 2006, at Jefferson County Geriatric Center, Winchester. She was born Feb. 21, 1908, in Leavenworth, the daughter of Charles Leslie and Rosa Lena Karst Coffman.
Mrs. Courtney became a registered nurse, training at St. John’s School of Nursing in Leavenworth. She was a homemaker and lived on a farm near Springdale during her entire married life. She was a former member of St. Joseph of the Valley Church, Leavenworth, and of Sacred Heart Church, Tonganoxie.
She married Charles Edwin Courtney on Sept. 5, 1933, in Platte City, Mo. He preceded her in death in 1954.
Survivors include two sons, Robert E. Courtney Sr., and Charles R. Courtney, both of McLouth; two daughters, Shirley A Breeden, Salinas, Calif., and Sharon L. Edmonds, Oskaloosa; 16 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, William R. Courtney; grandsons, William R. Courtney Jr. and Charles R. Courtney; three brothers and a sister.
