Chieftain football players dominate coaches’ picks for all-league team
The 2006 Kaw Valley League championship team earned some individual accolades as well.
Tonganoxie High won the outright KVL football title last month and last week, landed several Chieftain players on the all-league team.
League coaches named nine Tonganoxie players to 18 spots on the all-league team, by far the most of any KVL team.
THS garnered eight first-team selections for the 2006 football season. Senior Jeff Hughes earned first-team honors in the offensive backs and receivers category, as did senior Zeb Kissinger. Hughes compiled 2,006 yards of offense — 1,156 rushing yards and 850 passing yards as a quarterback. He also had 13 rushing touchdowns and 9 passing touchdowns. Kissinger had 265 yards as a receiver on 15 catches.
On the offensive line, seniors Justin McDaniel and Derek Parrett brought home first-team honors. The duo earned the same recognition as defensive linemen. Parrett had 49 assisted tackles and 25 solo with 11 behind the line of scrimmage in the regular season; McDaniel had 46 assisted, 18 solo and 10 behind the line
And in the defensive backs/linebackers category, Kissinger and fellow senior Daniel Volk earned first-team recognition.
Kissinger registered 50 assisted tackles and 22 solo tackles, along with three in the backfield. Kissinger also intercepted a pass. Volk accumulated 37 assisted tackles, 18 solo tackles and five interceptions.
Second-team status went to several Chieftains also.
Volk, senior Tyler Miles and junior Kevin Gill were named second-team all-league for offensive backs and eceivers, while senior Bryan Morris received recognition as a lineman on offense and defense. Offensively, Volk was Tonganoxie’s top running back with 782 yards on 160 carries. Gill rushed for 464 yards on 82 carries. Defensively, Morris had 35 assisted tackles, 24 solo tackles and 13 behind the line in the regular season.
Hughes was the second-team punter.
As for honorable mention, senior Noah Fugate made the team at that level as an offensive lineman, while junior Wes Armstrong and Miles and Hughes were named honorable mention as defensive backs and linebackers.
Armstrong, a junior, had 44 assists, 19 solos and two behind the line. Miles made 30 assisted tackles and 15 solo, while Hughes had 33 assisted and nine solo. Hughes and Miles also intercepted three passes each on the season.
Tonganoxie finished the season with an 8-2 record that included an undefeated league record. THS dropped two of its final three games to Atchison and Holton, two teams that advanced in the Class 4A playoffs. Atchison advanced to the second round, where it fell to Eudora, while Holton lost in the third round Friday to Holton.
Holton knocked Tonganoxie out of the first round of the playoffs with a 20-0 victory Oct. 31 in a game played at the HHS football stadium.
