Lessons to learn

By Shawn Linenberger - | Apr 11, 2007

An experienced De Soto squad gave Tonganoxie fits Thursday in a girls soccer game at Chieftain Park in Tonganoxie.

But THS coach Ken Lott hopes his Chieftains can learn from the Wildcats, who won 8-2 and dropped THS to 1-2 on the season.

“They had a pretty good team,” Lott said about DHS. “They did a lot of things well.

“And we are just not up to that level yet, but hopefully by the end of the season we’ll be able to compete with teams like that.”

De Soto scored within the first four minutes of the game and never looked back. Tonganoxie did score in the first half on a Jordan Gagne goal, but DHS led at intermission, 4-1. Alexa Moreno scored the Chieftains’ lone goal in the second half on a free kick 20 yards out.

The Chieftains were supposed to play against Piper on Tuesday in Tonganoxie, but rains forced the postponement of junior varsity and varsity games until 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. today at Chieftain Park.

Tonganoxie will look to rebound after the loss to the Wildcats.

“There’s always things to learn when you play a team like that,” Lott said. “But I think the big thing is just for the girls to realize they’re playing a team that’s been together and has some good players behind them.

“The biggest thing we learned is we have to play as a team and everyone has to do their job and move the ball around better. Stay in possession, more or less.”
