By Shawn Linenberger - | Apr 11, 2007

McLouth battled back from a first-game defeat and won game two of a Thursday doubleheader game against Pleasant Ridge. The victory at home was McLouth’s first of the season.

On a day when several area schools canceled baseball and softball games and track meets, the Bulldogs played on despite chilly temperatures.

In the first game, Pleasant Ridge opened with two runs in the first inning and added three more in the third for a 5-0 lead. McLouth went scoreless until the seventh inning, when the Bulldogs scored one run. Andrew Booth drove in teammate Ryan Smith, but the Bulldogs couldn’t rack up any more runs despite outhitting the Rams, 10-6. The Bulldogs also committed three errors to the Rams’ one.

Derrick Crouse led MHS in the first game with three hits, while Trevor Keling had two more. Mark Stewart, Lance Lamborn and Brian Kabus each had one hit.

Lance Lamborn took the loss for McLouth. He allowed five runs on six hits. He walked six batters, but also struck out 11 Rams.

In the second game, the Bulldogs turned more of their hits into runs.

McLouth scored eight runs on 15 hits in an 8-5 win.

PRHS again opened with a 2-0 lead before McLouth bounced back with a run in the bottom of the second. The Rams again held a 5-1 lead, as Pleasant Ridge scored three in the third, but McLouth answered with three of its own in the fourth and pulled to within one, 5-4, after four innings.

McLouth’s breakthrough inning was the fifth, when the Bulldogs scored four runs, putting McLouth ahead for good.

Smith picked up the win for McLouth. He pitched a complete game, scattering four hits through seven innings. He also struck out seven PRHS batters and walked four.

Offensively, Mark Stewart led the Bulldogs with three hits and four RBI. Smith went 1-for-2 with three RBI.

Booth finished the game 2-for-3 with three runs.

McLouth improved to 1-3 on the season.

MHS will play at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in a doubleheader against Immaculata. The Bulldogs also will play at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, also at home, against Atchison County.
