Suspect at-large arrested in Illinois

A man who is accused of stealing a vehicle from a handicapped Topeka and raping and beating her in May is behind bars.

Erol Mustafa Sutton, 40, was taken into custody Tuesday, July 24, in Topeka after being arrested in Springfield, Ill., according to KTKA-TV 49 reports.

Sutton was the subject of a search in Tonganoxie in May after a Tonganoxie police officer, while on a routine patrol, noticed someone walking through the Sonic Drive-In parking lot near U.S. Highway 24-40. When the officer drove through the parking lot, the man could not be found, but the officer did notice a vehicle parked near the restaurant. The car, police discovered, had been reported as stolen.

At the time of the discovery of the abandoned car, Topeka K-9 units were brought as part of a search for Sutton, but he could not be found. A precautionary lockdown also was instituted throughout the Tonganoxie School District’s buildings. Tonganoxie High School is just across U.S. 24-40 to the south of the restaurant.

Sutton was arrested on charges of aggravated criminal sodomy, aggravated battery, aggravated burglary and aggravated robbery, which all are felonies.
