THS soccer outmatched by Bonner Springs

By Eric Sorrentino - | Aug 29, 2007

The Tonganoxie boys soccer team had trouble establishing consistent defensive pressure against Bonner Springs Monday night at Chieftain Park.

The results showed.

In the 7-1 loss, Tonganoxie had only four shots on goal, as compared to Bonner Springs’ 27.

“You can’t stop a fast team if you’re not in position and we just weren’t in position,” Tonganoxie coach Ken Lott said. “When we were in position, it seemed like we never could come out with the ball because we’d either hang on to it too long or make a bad pass.”

Tonganoxie’s night worsened 10 minutes into the second half when Jamison Bloomer came out of the game with a strained groin. The junior is one of the Chieftains top players. He’s expected to miss one to two weeks.

The Chieftains’ goal came with 20:10 remaining in the first half. Bloomer assisted on the goal to sophomore Kenny Shultz, who broke away from Bonner Springs defenders. Shultz leaped up for the shot, lobbed the ball over the goalkeeper’s head and landed it in the back of the net.

“On that particular play, Kenny caught the ball on the right bounce after it crossed the middle and when you get those kind of opportunities, you need to finish them,” Lott said. “At least there’s a bright spot if we know that we can keep doing that.”

Bonner Springs (1-1) was just too much, though. The Braves made passes look effortless. Their players were noticeably in position the entire game. They controlled the midfield. These fundamental qualities resulted in countless chances to score.

“They work together and know each other well,” Lott said of BSHS. “You can’t get that rhythm without it. They move the ball around and one-touch and two-touch really well. They set themselves up to score.”

Tonganoxie is now 0-2 on the year. The Chieftains lost, 4-0, against Mill Valley on Friday.

The Chieftains field four seniors this year: Josh Nowasell, Tyler Sparks, Erick Lowe and Austin Koontz.

Tonganoxie’s next game will be Thursday at Chieftain Park against Basehor-Linwood. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
