Obituary: John V. Colt

Funeral services for John V. Colt, 78, Kansas City, Mo., will be at 2:30 p.m. today, Jan. 31, 2007, at Heartland Cremation and Burial Society, 6113 Blue Ridge Blvd., Raytown, Mo. Visitation will begin an hour before the service.
Mr. Colt died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007, at the Kansas City Hospice House. He was born Sept. 21, 1928, in Kansas City, Kan., the son of John W. Colt and Arlene Van Osdell Colt.
He graduated from North Kansas City High School and attended Ottawa University and Kansas State University.
He started his career as a journalist in Great Bend and later worked as a reporter for the Independence Examiner, The Kansas City Star and The St. Louis Globe Democrat. In 1977 he and his wife, Janet, published the Raytown Post newspaper, which they operated for 10 years. He then worked in media relations as a lobbyist in Jefferson City and with the anti-drug program for Jackson County from 1982 to 1994. He received numerous awards during his newspaper career.
He was preceded in death by a son, David Colt; and a grandson.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two brothers, Robert Colt, Lawson, Mo., and Zack Colt, Shell Knob, Mo.; two sisters, Carole Tatum, Padre Island, Texas, and Linda Graham, Ruston, La.; two sons, John Colt Jr., Leavenworth, and Timothy Colt, Olathe; three daughters, Diane Seber, Leavenworth, Lori Jewell, Tonganoxie and Hally Colt, Kansas City, Kan; a stepson, Stephen Covell; two stepdaughters, Janet Pace and Karen Stolfus; 20 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to the Kansas City Hospice.
