THS softball drops pair

By Mirror Staff Reports - | Apr 20, 2009

The Tonganoxie High softball team, playing in just its second and third games of the season, was swept in a doubleheader at Mill Valley on Thursday.

The Chieftains lost 7-1 in the first game and fell, 6-4, in the second.

The first game was close for a while but THS (0-3) ran into trouble in the late innings. The game was tied, 1-1, entering the bottom of the fifth inning. Then MVHS scored one in the fifth and added five more in the sixth.

Junior Angela Jacobs started for THS and went 5 1/3 innings, striking out four. Freshman Brooklyn Kerbaugh entered in the sixth to record the final two outs.

The Jaguars only had one more hit than Tonganoxie in the game but errors and untimely walks led to the lopsided score. MVHS recorded just six hits to the Chieftains’ five — one apiece from Kaitlyn Wolken, Lauren Himpel, Alisha Barnes, Angela Jacobs and Makayla Leslie.

In the second game, THS had six hits that came at the right time, enabling the team to score four runs in the two-run setback.

Himpel went 2-for-4 with a stolen base, McKenzie Knight doubled, Wolken had a hit, Tiffany Jacobs tripled and freshman Kailan Kuzmic drove in two runs with a hard-hit single.

Kerbaugh started the second game in the circle before she was relieved by Tiffany Jacobs in the fifth. Jacobs struck out three in her first appearance this season.

THS coach Diane Titterington said MVHS just had more game experience than the Chieftains, who have had four games postponed due to rain.

Titterington said THS showed glimmers of good things to come in the twinbill, adding that if the Chieftains can avoid second guessing themselves and keep taking small steps forward each game, the team should make a lot of progress.
