Track teams run in middle of pack at EHS

Some minor injuries and KSHSAA rules kept Tonganoxie High’s boys and girls track teams from having their normal roster, but that didn’t keep them from solid finishes Friday at Eudora’s Cardinal Relays.
The Chieftain girls finished fifth in team points and the boys were sixth.
As has been the case so far this season, the throwers led the way for the THS girls.
It was another meet and another personal (and school) record for Roni Grizzle in the shot put. She won the event at Eudora with a throw of 43 feet, 8 inches, a half-inch better than her former best, which she set at the Kansas Relays a week earlier.
Grizzle also won the javelin and placed second in the discus. But the senior wasn’t alone in scoring points in throws for THS. Her younger sister, Dominique Grizzle, was third in the shot put and third in the discus. Senior Chrissie Jeannin was second in the javelin and sophomore Danielle Miller was sixth in the discus.
THS was able to score a few points in track events as well. Cristina Rubio placed third in the 400-meter dash and the 4×800 relay team of Andie Jeannin, Megan Puhr, Sagan Scates and Lauren Hall took fourth.
Tonganoxie coach Chris Weller said the team was hoping for a better overall performance than fifth but some small injuries kept a few athletes from competing. Still, the coach said there were some talented teams at Eudora.
“Competition wise, DeSoto and Baldwin will be in the top three or four at state,” Weller opined. “Eudora will not be far behind. I hope by the end of this week we are healthier and have less distraction.”
THS boys sixth
Although the Tonganoxie boys were without four of their top athletes — DJ Lindsay, Jeremy Carlisle, David Powell and Bret Koch sat out at Eudora to stay under the maximum eight meets a year — two Chieftains were able to win events at Eudora.
Senior Austin Smith won the high jump by bounding over the 6-2 bar and sophomore Jake Willis continued his stellar pole vaulting season by winning the event with a mark of 13 feet.
“I was excited we did as well as we did,” THS boys coach Phil Williams said of a sixth-place finish.
If some of the team’s runners were competing at Eudora, Williams said, the team scores would have been a lot different.
“The competition was definitely tough at Eudora, but the four boys who ran at the KU Relays did not compete, so we knew we probably would not win the meet,” the coach said. “With the extra 50 to 60 points they would have scored, we would have been pretty close.”
Field events provided most of Tonganoxie’s points at Eudora. Along with Smith in the high jump, Dylan Jacobs also scored with a sixth-place finish. Shawn Roberts placed third in the javelin and Reece Hollingsworth was fourth. Stephen Wilson was fourth in the discus and Dylan Scates took fifth place in the triple jump.
Tonganoxie’s track teams travel on Friday to the Gardner-Edgerton Invitational.
