? Colby Yates won the Perry-Lecompton Invitational on Thursday, leading the Tonganoxie High golf team to a second-place finish at Lake Perry Country Club.

It was another day of records for the Chieftains as Yates shot a career low 70 — one over par on the short, par-69 course — and THS fired a school record low for the third straight time. Tonganoxie shot 319 (two strokes lower than their score at Ottawa on Monday) but finished 17 strokes behind winner Jeff West.

Yates’ individual title at the Perry-Lecompton Invitational was the freshman’s third this season. Senior Dalton Lawson placed eighth at Ozawkie with a score of 76. Justin Soetaert, playing as Tonganoxie’s No. 5 golfer Thursday, posted the third best score on the team with 84, a personal low.

Freshman Kody Campbell shot an 89 for THS, junior Justin Jacobs finished with a 91 and junior Mitch DeHoff tallied 93 strokes.

“I hope we can keep our hot streak going with league this upcoming Monday and regionals the following week,” THS coach Jared Jackson said.

On Monday, Tonganoxie will compete at the Kaw Valley League meet in Overbrook. Then, on May 18, the team will play its regional tournament at Heritage Park in Olathe. The top two teams there qualify for the state tournament, as do the top five golfers from non-qualifying teams.
