Looking for a victory after settling for a tie in its season opener, the Tonganoxie High boys soccer team couldn’t match the quality looks visiting Bonner Springs got on Tuesday night at Chieftain Park.
The Chieftains had plenty of attempts, but two great goals from the Braves late in the first half were the difference in a 2-0 loss for THS.
BSHS took a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute with a Shawn Jones header on a cross from Tyler Kelly. Jones found the ball waiting in the air for him directly in front of THS keeper Mitch DeHoff and bounced it up and over the goalie.
After that, the Braves began playing with confidence.
Just more than six minutes later, Bonner Springs (1-0) scored again. Conner Harrington gathered the ball on the right side from about 17 yards out and buried a kick in the back of the net after shaking off the Tonganoxie defense.

Braves goalkeeper Brett Steuart played well in the shutout, despite an onslaught of attempts early in the second half from THS forward Tyler Woolworth.
Tonganoxie (0-1-1) kept pushing and firing but couldn’t find the timing to net a goal. Kenny Schultz, Matt Saathoff and Preston Putthoff all had chances that missed during the match.
DeHoff, meanwhile, played well in goal, remaining positive as he slapped away some Bonner Springs shots and wrapped up others.
The Chieftains are at home once again on Thursday for a 6 p.m. match with Basehor-Linwood.
