Shannon Young, 36, plead guilty as charged to all three counts of unlawful voluntary sexual relations with a then 17-year-old student at Pleasant Ridge High School in Easton.

The Leavenworth County Attorney’s Office said the charges stemmed from incidents Aug. 1, 2009, and June 2, 2010.

Prosecutors said Young had sexual intercourse at least three times with the student; once at her Leavenworth County home; once at the school and once in her car.

Investigators said the relationship started Young was consulting with the student about his pending child with his girlfriend at the time. The relationship between teacher and student accelerated from there.

Investigators found several letters believed to have been written to the student detailing intimate thoughts and longings to “lay next to you, kissing you, licking you and rubbing my hands all over you.” In one, he wrote, “it doesn’t matter how tough it gets I still want to be with you.”

Investigators also found seminude pictures of Young on the student’s cell phone.

It was learned the student had begun driving a newer model Mustang convertible purchased by Young. Investigators also found Young and the student had opened a joint checking account.

During an interview with authorities, the student admitted to having consensual sexual intercourse at least three times with Shannon Young since approximately October 2009, which at that time he was above the legal age of consent in the Kansas.

At one time after the investigation began, it was reported Young attempted suicide.

Prosecutors said the sentencing guideline for a person with no criminal history, such as Young, calls for mandatory probation. Young would have to file as a registered sex offender for the next 10 years, and Young could have no contact with the victim.

Since the time of the incidents involving Young, prosecutors said, Kansas has amended legislation for sentencing in future similar cases that allows prosecution and defense to advocate either prison or probation time.

Young’s sentencing has been scheduled for 10 a.m. Sept. 8 in Leavenworth County District Court.

This marks the third similar case since 2009 in Leavenworth County. Two Basehor-Linwood school district teachers pleaded guilty in cases involving the same student at Basehor-Linwood High School.
