Chieftains’ 4th-quarter rally edges Mill Valley
Shawnee ? Tonganoxie High’s boys basketball team trailed the first 12-plus minutes of the second half, once by 11 points, but put together a spectacular fourth quarter to beat Mill Valley, 60-57, Tuesday night.
The Chieftains trailed by nine points after three quarters, but opened the fourth on a 9-0 run to tie things up before eventually taking the lead for good when senior forward Keaton Schaffer hit a runner off glass with 2:30 to go.
Schaffer established himself early in the fourth quarter for THS (11-8 overall, 8-4 Kaw Valley League) by getting to the free-throw line just 10 seconds into the period.
Just more than a minute after Schaffer hit one of two from the line, Tonganoxie sophomore center Dane Erickson converted a three-point play in transition.
Chieftains junior point guard Jeremy Carlisle later set up Schaffer, who scored 10 of his game-high 23 points in the fourth, for a three and a fast-break layup in the next minute and a half and the game was tied at 46 with 5:10 on the clock.
But Mill Valley junior guard Sam Carroll hit a at the 4:06 mark to give the Jaguars (8-11, 8-4) a 48-46 lead.
An offensive rebound and bucket from Schaffer tied the game at 48 and THS took its first lead since the opening minutes of the first quarter when junior guard Dylan Scates scored in transition with 3:44 remaining.
Although MVHS senior forward Austin Muckenthaler scored and drew a foul on a nifty spin move that led to a three-point play and a 51-50 Jaguars advantage, Erickson answered with a score in the paint 10 seconds later.
Mill Valley took its last lead of the night with 2:51 to go as Tyler Gude hit both ends of a one-and-one but Schaffer’s runner 21 seconds later set up Tonganoxie for the road victory.
The Jaguars close their regular season on Friday at Mill Valley.
The Chieftains’ final regular-season contest is a Friday home date with Piper.
