By Shawn Linenberger - | May 9, 2012

A convicted sex offender who escaped from Lansing Correctional Facility three weeks ago was back in custody Wednesday afternoon.

Gary Leslie Furthmyer, 59, was taken into custody about 2 p.m. in Kansas City, Kan., according to the Department of Corrections. He was taken to Wyandotte County Jail before being returned to the correctional facility Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Department of Corrections, more than a dozen tips were called into the Crimestoppers TIPS Hotline, one of which led directly to Furthmyer’s capture in the 600 block of Nebraska Street in Kansas City, Kan.

Furthmyer escaped early April 18 from his minimum custody job assignment at the correctional facility’s steam plant.

When he escaped, Furthmyer was serving a six- to 25-year sentence for a 1985 conviction on indecent liberties with a child and aggravated failure to appear in Sedgwick County.

He also escaped Department of Corrections custody in 1988 and was returned to custody in 1993. He previously served time in Texas and Louisiana before returning to Lansing in 2005 on a parole violation.
